MRI

fMRI provides a way to measure and map brain activity. Brain cells communicate with each other using chemical and electrical signals. Generating thes signals uses energy which is provided by oxygen in the blood supply. When a brain area increases its activity, its enery needs also increase and this causes an increase in the supply of oxygenated blood to that area. fMRI provides a measure of brain activity by tracking the flow of blood to various regions of the brain. This increased blood flow is visualized as regions of intense color superimposed on an anatomical image of the participant’s brain.

Background and Interests

I study how the timing and content of perception are encoded in the brain and modulated by attention, in both normal and clinical populations. I specialize in both psychophysics and measuring the subcortex—the lateral and medial geniculate nuclei and thalamic reticular nucleus in the thalamus, and the superior colliculus—using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging. The subcortical nuclei play central roles in the recurrent regulation of sensory function, and here, like nowhere else in the brain, distinct information streams are spatially disjoint and their activity can be measured with high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging. Abnormalities in these structures may be important in clinical disorders such as dyslexia.
